Hernandez, who has served as the St. Andrews women’s basketball assistant coach for the past two years, will be filling the void left when Jennifer Montgomery resigned a day earlier to take a Division I coaching job. Hernandez will continue to fill his duties with the women’s basketball team.
“I have watched Randy [Hernandez] grow as a person and coach during his time at St. Andrews,” said Batten. “He understands the role that athletics plays in helping educate young people and will serve as both a role model and mentor as he leads the women’s soccer program until a new coach is selected.”
Hernandez has an extensive background in strength and conditioning and he will be looked upon to bring his expertise to the women’s soccer program in workouts and practices. Hernandez will be coaching the Lady Knights in scrimmages throughout the spring.
“I thank Glenn Batten for the opportunity and confidence he has in my ability. I look forward to working with a great group of young women. I am going to help them prepare for next season and a new coach,” commented Hernandez.
The Bronx, N.Y., native has a Bachelor of Arts degree in sports and recreation from St. Andrews in December of 2009. Hernandez has also served as a residence director at SAPC.
St. Andrews is conducting a national search for a permanent head women’s soccer coach with assistant athletic director’s Keith Williams and Elizabeth Burris coordinating the process.
