BREVARD—Senior point guard Jaquese Smith swished a go-ahead basket with 51 seconds left and made four consecutive clutch free throws in the final moments to lead the St. Andrews Presbyterian College women’s basketball team to an 84-81 non-conference victory at Brevard College.

The Lady Knights -- who only had five active players and played the last 10 minutes and 25 seconds with only four players -- shot a season-best 50.9-percent (28-55) to improve to 3-19 on the season. The Tornados fell to 8-16 their third straight loss.

Smith deposited a career-high 19 points while handing out a game-high six assists. Sophomore guard Megan Lee scored a game and career high 32 points. Lee was 12-of-19 from the floor for her third consecutive game with 20-plus points.

A pair of Knights recorded double-doubles including sophomore Brittany Roberts and senior Kayla Hay. Roberts bucketed 16 points and grabbed a career-high 13 rebounds. Hay tallied 15 points and 10 rebounds before fouling out at the 10:25 mark. Hay also tied her career-high total of five blocks.

SAPC made a season-best seven three-pointers including a pair of long balls from Smith, Lee, and Roberts. The Knights shot 50-percent from behind the arc and 77.8-percent (21-of-26) from the free throw line.

Lee scored 10 of the Lady Knights’ 19 points in a 19-6 run midway through the first period that gave St. Andrews the largest lead of the game at 34-20. The Tornados closed the frame with a 16-4 rally to close the gap to two points, 38-36, at halftime.

After 30 minutes of play, Brevard looked poised to take control of the game with Hay fouling out and then taking its largest lead of eight points 40 seconds later at 62-54. St. Andrews never quit, even with only four players on the court, scoring the next eight points to knot the score once again.

The two teams stayed within one possession of each other for the final eight minutes with senior Samantha Winn making a layup with 1:10 on the clock to give the hosts a 79-78 lead. Smith responded for the Knights on the ensuing possession, hitting her go-ahead jumper with 51 ticks left. BC missed a shot and committed a turnover on its next two possessions while St. Andrews converted on its final five free throws to seal the three-point victory.

The showdown featured nine ties and 11 lead changes. Brevard held a 40-32 rebounding edge while both teams had 11 turnovers.

Winn notched a 21-point, 12-rebound double-double to pace the Tornados, who shot 43.8-percent.

A quartet of Lady Knights played all 40 minutes including freshman center Sylvee Ubiera as the Royal Blue & White picked up its first road win in two seasons. The Lady Knights will try for two in a row when they visit Conference Carolinas foe Pfeiffer University today at 5:30 p.m.
