They decided to do some spoiling of their own on Richmond's senior night.
The Lady Scots held the Lady Raiders to single digit-scoring in all four quarters, on their way to a 34-30 win.
With the victory, Scotland completed the regular season with a 16-7 record, and 7-3 in the Southeastern Conference. The loss drops Richmond to 17-3 overall, and 8-2 in the conference. The Lady Raiders loss, coupled with Lumberton's win over Purnell Swett, denies Richmond a share of the conference title.
"This is a game that we can build off of for the tournament and the playoffs," said Scotland coach David Johnson. "I thought the girls responded really well after the loss to Lumberton."
In a back-and-forth first quarter, it looked like the two teams would be tied at nine after the first eight minutes of action, but a putback by the Lady Scot's Jonissa Monley, put her team up a basket, 11-9, at the end of the first quarter.
Richmond cut the lead to 13-12 with 2:13 to play in the first half, but Brittany Dockery decided to change that for Scotland.
The senior forward scored back-to-back baskets to put her team up five (17-12) with 1:31 to go.
A pair of free throws from the Lady Raider's Demi Watkins, made it an 18-15 game at halftime.
"We definitely put more emphasis on defense," Johnson said on the low-scoring affair. "At our place, they (Richmond) really hurt us on the offensive glass, along with getting the loose balls and committing fewer turnovers. We were able to dominate the glass and took better care of the ball."
The tight game continued in the third quarter as the Lady Scots built up a five-point lead (20-15) before a 3-point play from LaShey Brown made a 20-18 game midway through the quarter. Brown led the way for the Richmond with nine points.
A lay-up from Ariel Ratcliff with 20 seconds to play in the quarter, made it a four-point (24-20) affair. Kay Well cut the Lady Scots deficit to 24-22 entering the fourth quarter.
The Lady Raiders tied the game up twice in the final quarter. First at 28 on a putback from Watkins and then a lay-up from Brown tied it at 30 with with 3:08 to play.
A mid-range jumper from Dockery and a lay-up from Bridgette Dockery made it a two-possession game (34-30) with 41 seconds to play.
"Those baskets were big and as seniors that's what they're suppose to do," said Johnson of the final minute. "This is their third year on varsity and I expect that from them. They both did a good job of stepping up and hitting the big shots."
Richmond had one final shot, but a desperation three from Watkins with nine seconds left, fell short.
"I'm a little disappointed that we're not going to be regular season champs but I was proud of their effort," Richmond's interim coach Nellie Harrington said. "I think we may have been overlooking this game and that can happen when things get rescheduled."
Ratcliff was the lone player on either squad in double figures with 11 points. She also had five steals and four assists.
(Brittany) Dockery added nine points to go along with seven rebounds while Tierra Pate had six points, including a pair of baskets in the fourth quarter.
(Bridgette) Dockery and Monley each chipped in four points apiece. (Bridgette) Dockery also grabbed 11 rebounds.
Watkins and Salina Bright complimented Brown with five points apiece for Richmond.
