After the Knights (7-16 Overall, 3-13 Conf.) pulled to within three points with six minutes and 25 seconds left, Anderson (16-6, 10-6) made 14 of its last 16 free throw attempts to pull away for the 11-point victory.
Senior Tony Anderson made two of his four made three-pointers during an 11-3 Trojans run to extend the visitors advantage to 11 with four minutes left before AU sealed the win from the charity stripe. T. Anderson and junior Kevis Cornwell led the Trojans with 18 points apiece.
Garst’s resilient play kept the Knights in the game as he scored 15 of his 22 points in the second half. Garst – who leads Conference Carolinas in rebounding – pulled down 16 rebounds (ties career-high) for his 13th double-double of the season.
A total of four Knights reached the 10-plus point scoring plateau. Junior forward Marvin Jackson was the only St. Andrews reserve to score in the game, draining 18 points. The sophomore guard duo of Kurt Fenderbosch and Antonio Moffitt tallied 14 and 12 points, respectively. Fenderbosch scored 12 of his 14 points on a quartet of three-pointers.
Anderson led from coast-to-coast as the Trojans built a 41-24 halftime advantage by firing at 53.8-percent accuracy in the first half while holding SAPC to 32.1-percent. The Knights outshot the Trojans in the final 20 minutes, 50.0-percent to 42.3-percent, but they couldn’t overcome 16 more made free throws by Anderson.
Trailing by 11, St. Andrews made four consecutive lay-ups featuring a pair by both Garst and Moffitt in a two-minute span to cut the deficit to three, 62-59, with 6:25 on the clock before the Trojans went on their decisive 11-3 run.
AU junior Trey Britton scored all 14 of his points in the second half and classmate Brandon Young tallied nine of his 11 points in the final period. Britton (10-10) and Young (11-12) were a combined 21-of-22 from the free throw line.
The Trojans -- who ranks 13th nationally in both points per game (86.3) and made three-pointers per game (8.9) – hit their averages with 86 points and eight made 3-pointers.
Knights’ sophomore Micah Baines contributed seven points and a career-high six assists. Junior Marcus Connor, who leads NCAA Division II in blocks, rejected five Anderson shots to surpass the 100-block milestone marker on the season.
Sophomore Taylor Shugart was the fifth Trojan to reach double figures with 10 points.
