The shooting may have stemmed from a brawl at a McColl, S.C. night club that involved the victim, his girlfriend and the daughter of the shooter just a few hours earlier, according to Laurinburg police.
Police arrested 49-year-old Wayne "Wolf" Simmons, of Bennettsville, S.C., in the parking lot of the Laurinburg hospital within moments of the shooting, charging him with attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon with the intent to kill, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and discharging a firearm into a medical facility, according to a police report. Simmons was treated for a heart condition at Scotland Memorial Hospital and is expected to be moved to an undisclosed location.
Domario Covington, 31, of Bennettsville, was admitted to Scotland Memorial Hospital for cuts he received in a fight at Ellison Club on U.S. 401 in McColl, the report said. While Covington was in the emergency room with his girlfriend, Jessica Gillespie, Simmons entered the hospital claiming to be a family member of Covington, the report said.
Covington was taken back to Covington's room where he fired several shots into Covington's chest, according to the report. Simmons then turned towards Gillespie and attempted to fire at her, but the gun appeared to malfunction and would not discharge, police said.
Simmons then fled out a back entrance to the hospital, throwing his gun into a trash can, the report said. He was taken into custody by police in the parking lot and the gun was recovered.
Covington also tried to run out the front door, afraid he was still in danger, the report said. A nurse ran after Covington, bringing back into the hospital.
He was in critical but stable condition.
Several others were being detained for questions and other charges may stem from this incident, according to police.
