William D. Barber, 48, was arrested at his Gum Swamp Lake Road residence on Tuesday night and charged with trafficking opium and maintaining a drug dwelling, the report said. Bond was set at $10,000.
The arrest was made after an undercover operation that included the purchase of Lorcet pills by an informant, according to Investigator Scott Jacobs of the Scotland County Sherrif's Office. Lorcets are a scheduled II controlled substance.
He said Barber obtained the painkillers through prescriptions and then sold them to others.
Deputies did not find any illegal drugs on Barber during his arrest, Jacobs said, but
sold over 25 Lorcet pills to an informant.
Investigators do not believe this was Barber's first time selling narcotics, though this is the first time he has been caught.
Jacobs said its his hope that this arrest and others help stamp out the sale of illegal prescription drugs in the county, something he fears is reaching high levels.
"We have so many reports of the prescription pills being abused," Jacobs said. "Over the past year, I have received more complaints for prescription medication abuse than for other illegal substances."
