The current chairman of the Scotland County Board of Education was the only candidate to file on Tuesday as midday rains may kept people from venturing to the elections office.

More candidates were expected, but Scotland County Board of Elections Director Dell Parker said gloomy weather was the likely culprit in the sparse turnout.

"(Monday) was a really good day," Parker said. "I hoped it would be busier (Tuesday.)"

She expects more to file today.

Filing period runs until noon on Feb. 26.

Jimmy Bennett filed to run for his at-large seat on the school board.

"I want to see all our children get the best education that will prepare them for the workforce or college," Bennett said. "I want to see our educational system move forward."

The board chairman and productionn manager for a seed company lives at 17260 Hurley Drive, Laurinburg, with wife Shauna. They have three daughters and two grandchildren.

So far, only Bennett and Mary Evans have filed to run for reelection to the school board. Calvin Newton, at-large, and Paul Rush, Stewartsville, are both up for reelection this year.

None of the three members of the Scotland County Board of Commissioners who are up for reelection this year have filed. They are: Board Chairman J.D. Willis, Stewartsville District; Guy McCook, Stewartsville District; and Vice-Chairman Betty Gholston, Spring Hill District.

State and federal races

Several candidates have filed with the North Carolina Board of Elections to run in a number of races that could affect Scotland County.

Three people have filed to run against Sen. Richard Burr for his seat. Lumberton Democrat Marcus W. Williams, Asheboro Republican Edward James Burks and Michael Beitler have all filed to run for the U.S. Senate, according to the state election board. Burr has yet to file.

Raeford Republican Tim D'Annunzio and Concord Libertarian Thomas Hill have both filed to run against Rep. Larry Kissell for his Eighth District congressional seat. Kissell filed on Monday.

Judges William McIlwain, III and Regina Joe have both filed to run for reelection to their district 16A judge seats.
