PEMBROKE—Sophomore starter Ashley Disque tossed her third complete game for St. Andrews Presbyterian College in less than 24 hours but West Virginia State University continued its strong play en route to a 9-1 victory Sunday afternoon in the final game of the inaugural UNCP invitational.

The Yellow Jackets finished the tournament with an impressive 3-1 record after scoring nine runs on nine hits in the finale. The Lady Knights (0-4) dropped all four games in its first competition of 2010.

Disque and sophomore classmate Kaitlin Harris were both named to the UNCP Invitational All-Tournament Team. Disque hurled three complete games (18 total innings) in an approximate 20 hour span to earn her All-Tourney honors. Harris had half of the Knights extra-base hits this past weekend with a pair of doubles. Harris was second on the team with a .364 slugging percentage and had two of SAPC’s seven RBI to validate her All-Tourney selection.

West Virginia State scored a pair of unearned runs in the first inning and rode the momentum to the eight-run victory in six innings. Junior Margaret Osborne, who had a two-run single in the first, led WVSU going 3-for-4 with a double and two RBI. Sophomore Brittany Hyatt added a pair of doubles and three runs scored.

Freshman Kelsey Lorraine (2-0) picked up her second win of the round-robin tournament holding St. Andrews to just three-hits in the 6.0 inning complete game. Lorraine registered six strikeouts and did not allow an earned run.

The Knights scored their only run in the third inning. Disque led off with an infield single and advanced on second on a throwing error during the play. After Disque moved over to third on a groundout, sophomore Lex Cowger plated Disque with a single to center.

WVSU slowly built up its lead scoring two runs in the third, fifth, and sixth. SAPC was held without an extra-base hit for the third straight game.

Disque (3-0) was charged with the loss allowing nine runs (six earned) on nine hits and three walks over six innings. Disque had one strikeout.

St. Andrews next visits Southeast Region foe Wingate University for a non-conference twin bill on Saturday starting at 1 p.m.

No. 14 Kutztown knocks off St. Andrews

PEMBROKE— St. Andrews Presbyterian College was held to just six hits in a 9-1 loss to No. 14 nationally ranked Kutztown University in an early morning showdown Sunday in the inaugural UNC Pembroke Softball Invitational.

The Golden Bears (2-1) -- who were eliminated in the 2009 NCAA Super Regional to eventual national champion Lock Haven University -- continued to show its power to start 2010 scoring nine runs on 11 hits in the five-inning victory Sunday.

The Knights (0-3) outfield provided most of the team’s offense collecting five of the squad’s six hits. Freshman Kendra Norton scored the Knights only run in the fourth inning as SAPC took advantage of a couple Kutztown errors. Norton also had a single in the second. Senior Morgan Farroll and freshman Eryn Wiley each had a pair of singles.

Kutztown did most of its damage at the top of the order as freshman leadoff batter Marisa Isgro was 2-for-3 with three runs scored and an RBI-triple. Senior Maria Schiavo followed in the two spot driving in two runs on a trio of singles.

Junior starter Monica Glomb (1-0) kept the Knights batters at bay allowing one unearned run on six hits while striking out a game-high five batters. St. Andrews’ senior counterpart Daisy Mendez took the pitchers circle for the first time since the 2008 season, allowing nine runs (six earned) on 11 hits over four innings of work. Mendez (0-1) had fanned three.

The Knights put their leadoff batter on base in three of five innings but twice were stymied as Bears’ freshman catcher Katie Lynch threw out the base runner attempting to try stealing second base. SAPC left seven on base.

Lynch and sophomore Nicole Henninger both knocked in two Kutztown runs.
