Scotland’s Caison Murphy (24) takes it hard to the hoop in the second of their win over the Bucks. Murphy finished with nine points.
After knocking off undefeated Richmond Tuesday evening, the Hoke jayvee’ boys basketball team was hoping that their game with Scotland would not be a letdown.

The Scots did not quite cooperate Friday night.

Paced by three players in double figures, Scotland erased an early deficit as they knocked off the Bucks, 68-62.

The win improves the Scots to 11-5 overall and 5-2 in the Southeastern Conference. Hoke drops to 9-5 and 5-3 in the conference.

“After the first quarter, we went to a 2-1-2 defense and it resulted in them turning the ball over more,” Scotland coach James Behea said. “It worked out for us and we were able to get higher-percentage shots.”

Scotland benefited from an early 8-0 run to begin the game, but the Bucks took the lead, 12-10, on a basket from Chris Waddell and went up by four (14-10) on a putback by Jeremy Watson for two of his 13 points.

A lay-up from Hoke’s Brandon Jordan at the buzzer put the Bucks up 25-16 after the first quarter.

A 9-0 run by the Scots, that was highlighted by lay-ups from Donte Johnson and Travis Wall, tied the game at 26 with six minutes to play in the first half.

Caison Murphy would put Scotland up by two (28-26) with 4:58 to play.

Back-to-back baskets from Watson, including a buzzer beater, tied the game at 35 going into halftime.

A 3-point play from Hoke’s Jared Cole, put his team back on top (38-37) early in the third.

The Scots would cut it close and with less four minutes to play in the quarter, a lay-up from Dominique Green, put Scotland back on top by a point, 45-44.

Scotland would built up an 11-point lead (56-45) after three quarter thanks to an 11-1 run.

The Scots got the lead up as much as 13 on a putback from Wall.

The Bucks got as close as five (64-59) on a basket from Watson, but a turnaround jumper from Murphy put the lead out of reach with 1:35 to play.

“I told them all week long that we needed to take it right to them,” Bethea said. “I told the defense, if they take care of business, then we’ll win the game.”

Jauan Petty led Scotland with 17 points on the night. Green and Wall chipped in 13 and 11 respectively.

Murphy added nine, while Trey McRae scored eight.

The Scots will be in action three times next week, starting with a home game against Pinecrest Monday at 5 p.m.
