Nine-year-old Mira Grace Ward is no ordinary girl, though.
Instead of seeking presents for herself, Mira Ward asked friends and family members to bring donations for the Scotland County Humane Society to her ninth birthday party in lieu of gifts.
Her mother, Jennifer Ward said the idea fit with well with her daughter and the party.
"She decided to do this because she loves animals and she was having a dog themed birthday party and she thought that would be a good way to help them and have a good time while she was doing it."
The nine-year-old raised $92 for the Humane Society, also getting a bag of dog food and several dog toys for the local animal shelter.
"It makes me so proud that I have such a conscientious and concerned daughter," Jennifer Ward said. "She has always been very generous and from the time she was very small she has always contributed money to the St. Jude's Children Hospital."
This year, Mira Ward raised $150 for the children's hospital by soliciting donations from family and friends, her mother said. She also keeps pictures of some of the children at the hospital in her room.
"She has always shown a great deal of concern for the underdog, whether it's an animal or a sick child."
