Those ready for an evening of high energy praise and worship are invited to a night of "music, fun and food" with the band "Floodgate" in the sanctuary of St. Pauls United Methodist Church in Maxton. The event takes place at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday in the church sanctuary.

"The music by this band is that of heartfelt praise and worship," said Ann Giles Benson, pastor of St. Pauls. "It is very uplifting music, and will help bring one close to the Lord."

In addition to the musical performance, Evangelist Eugene Tyson will preach.

"The Tyson family is a well known group of preachers and evangelists," Benson said. "Among them is Tim Tyson, author of the popular work 'Blood Done Sign My Name'. Eugene Tyson is a fiery speaker; his family is a dynasty."

The evening will begin with Tyson's sermon, followed by music from Floodgate. Following a break in the church fellowship hall for pizza, "enough to feed both Robeson and Scotland Counties", according to Benson, the program will resume with praise and worship music, invitation, an altar call, and prayer.

"Praise is emphasized in the first half, with a focus on worship in the second," Benson said.

Floodgate, which is the house band at the Solid Rock United Methodist Church in Olivia, was formed in the year 2000 by keyboardist Gene Berrier.

"The band plays all styles of music, and I believe that is what has made us more successful than anything," Berrier said. "We do a bit of rock, soul, gospel, pop, traditional hymns, and more. We begin high energy, and then move to a worship session. I can't explain how it works, but it does."

Benson anticipates a meaningful experience for all at the weekend event.

"This evening of praise and worship is going to be good, and it's going to be exciting," Benson said. "For uplifting renewal and enthusiastic worship and fellowship, we hope to see all who will come on Saturday."

St. Pauls Nurture and Youth Group Leaders Harry and Reba McMillan, along with Sunday School Superintendent Cecil Weeks, made the decision to invite the group.

St. Pauls United Methodist Church is located at 106 MLK Jr. Boulevard in Maxton. There is no admission charge, but donations of $3 - $4 are welcome to offset food expenses.
