Brad McMillan and Mo Covington made sure that did not happen.
The junior and senior combined for 27 points and Scotland completed the season sweep of the Rams, 49-38.
“I knew that I hadn’t been playing well the last few games. Coach (Ritchie) told me to step it up,” said McMillan, who finished with 10 points.
Like their female counterparts, the Scots jumped out of the gates in the first quarter, going on a 10-2 run and led 18-8 after the first quarter.
Scotland got the three-ball going in the second , as Tony McRae extended the lead to 13 (21-8) following a 3-pointer.
Covington made it 27-14 on back-to-back 3-pointers with the second one being a potential 4-point play.
A basket from Dominique Clark with 2:22 to play in the half, made it a 29-16 game, forcing Purnell Swett to burn a time-out.
The Scots led 31-19 at the half.
The Rams prevented Scotland from putting the game out of reach and got the deficit down to single digits (36-28) in the third on a turn-around hook shot from Brock Jones.
Jones finished with a double-double, scoring 14 points and pulling down the same amount of rebounds.
Scotland got the lead back up to double digits early in the fourth before a 3-point play from Purnell Swett’s Tim Smith made it a nine-point game, 42-33.
A 3-pointer from Covington, his third of the night, made it a double digit lead with 2:49 to play. The point guard led all scorers with 17 points. He also added eight assists and five steals.
“They (Purnell Swett) definitely played better this time than they did last time,” Scotland coach Mike Ritchie said about their team’s last game with the Rams back on Jan.8. “A week’s layoff between games really hurt us. With the weather hitting you like that, it can get you out of your rhythm. It’s good to get back in here and get a win.”
Clark complimented McMillan and Covington with eight points and five rebounds.
Due to Pinecrest not having school today, tonight’s game with the Patriots has been moved to next Monday, Feb. 8.
