PEMBROKE-Freshman Brian Beatson dominated his 141 pound match to avoid St. Andrews Presbyterian College from being shut out in a 47-4 loss to the University of North Carolina at Pembroke on Friday night in the English E. Jones Center.
The Braves (13-6) -- who will most likely move into the national top-20 poll next week after upsetting No. 3 Pitt-Johnstown and No. 12 West Liberty State last weekend -- extended its winning streak to five straight dual match victories after winning nine of 10 bouts against the Knights (2-7).
After UNCP jumped out to a 12-0 lead with a pair of wins in the two lightest weight classes, Beatson put St. Andrews on the board with a convincing 17-3 major decision over Dorian McDougald. Beatson controlled the tilt grabbing an early 5-0 lead in the first period with a takedown and three back points before building up his advantage in the final two periods. Beatson moved over .500 on the year at 6-5 while improving to 3-1 in dual matches with six takedowns, a near fall, an escape, and 2:31 of riding time. Beatson, who only allowed McDougald to score three points on a trio of escapes where he let him up, was only one point shy of his second straight technical fall.
Junior Casey Gashaw took an early 2-0 advantage at 133 with a takedown for SAPC but Timdarius Thurston rallied back before pinning Gashaw in the final minute.
Freshman Davin Morris was close to giving the Knights another victory with a near fall in the second period of his 174 pound showdown but the Braves’ Derving Rios fought back for close 12-10 decision. Morris (7-12) led 4-1 after three minutes and 8-3 after five minutes. However, Rios scored nine points in the final frame to complete the two-point comeback victory. Morris had two takedowns.
UNCP tacked on the maximum 18 points in the final three weight classes to highlight their 43-point win on ‘Senior Night’. No. 5 nationally ranked J.J. Davis (184) and heavyweight Erik Stancil both had wins by pin. The Braves received a forfeit win at 197.
St. Andrews will try and win a second straight dual match at home when the Knights host region foe Limestone College on Friday at 7:30 p.m.
