Fire officials are investigating the cause of a fire that left seven people homeless on Monday.

The State Bureau of Investigation has been called in to determine how the fire at 617 Duncan Street started, according to Laurinburg Police Chief and Assistant Fire Chief John Evans.

Resident Michael Clark, who was sleeping when the fire started, said the afternoon blaze quickly engulfed his home.

"We barely got out in time," Clark said. "We lost everything. I don't know what we are going to do."

Also living in the house were woman and five children.

The tenant speculated that the house fire may have been caused by a faulty breaker box. Investigators have not determined the cause of the fire.

Laurinburg firefighters responded to the fire at about 12:45 p.m. and had the fire out within about half an hour. Officials estimated the damages at $25,000.

The home and its contents were completely destroyed.

Also destroyed was a vehicle parked near the residence.

During the fire, there was a loud popping noise. Firefighter believe the noise came from a tire of the car.

Carol Ann Lentz, executive director of the Scotland County Chapter of the American Red Cross, said her agency provided emergency food, clothing and temporary shelter for the seven occupants.

They will be put up in local hotel, Lentz said.
