A 14-year old was hospitalized after being attacked by another teen in Gibson, according to Sheriff Shep Jones.

Deputies arrested a 16-year old male Wednesday night and charged him with assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury, Jones said.

He was released into the custody of his grandmother on a written promise to appear for court.

The sheriff's department declined to release the name of either teen.

The victim was walking down Church Street in Gibson when a car pulled up next to him and two male teens stepped out, Jones said. One attacked the 14-year old with a knife and cut him several times. The teen fell to the ground and the assailant began hitting him. The two then returned to the car and left.

The 14-year old pulled himself to his feet and called for help, Jones said. A friend then transported him to Scotland Memorial Hospital where he was treated and released.

Deputies took the 16-year old into custody later in the night. The other teen was not charged as investigators believe he stood by and did not take part in the attack.

An eyewitness reported seeing the hospital taking extra precautions on Wednesday night, including having those in the emergency room screened with a handheld metal detector, shortly after the 14-year old was admitted.

Hospital spokesperson Karen Gainey could not confirm if any additional precautions were taken on Wednesday.

She said the hospital has a "visitor restriction policy" that goes into affect whenever the victim of a violent crime is admitted.

The policy requires everyone who enters the facility to be screened by a hand-held metal detector. It also prevents visitors from going into the emergency room to see patients, with the exception of parents of minor children who are patients at the hospital.

The policy went into affect several years ago.

"It seems to be effective," Gainey said.
