Thursday night’s battle was much closer. That is, until early in the fourth quarter.
The Lady Pirates went on a 16-0 run over the final 6:30 of the game and denied Scotland of a big upset, 35-18.
The win keeps Lumberton undefeated on the year at 8-0. The Lady Scots drop to 3-7.
After jumping out to a 10-2 lead after the first quarter, the Lady Pirates held Scotland scoreless until an Aaliyah Barnes field goal with 1:19 left before halftime.
It looked like that would be only basket of the quarter until the Lady Scots Julianna McKenzie hit a jumper with less than 10 seconds to play in the second.
Scotland trailed 17-6 after 14 minutes of play.
After a Scotland basket made it 17-8 early in the third, Lumberton looked to have had a clean block on the defensive end but the referees’ called a foul and it did sit well with the Lady Pirates coach, who would dispute the call.
The guys in stripped shirts ended up assessing the coach with a pair of technicals and was ejected from the game.
Between Alexsa Cousar and Kaylin Ganus, they could only make 1-of-4 free throws.
Following the technicals, a field goal from Barnes and a 3-pointer by Ganus cut the Lumberton lead to just four (19-15) at the end of three quarters.
Cousar made it a one-point Lady Pirate lead (19-18) on a 3-point shot with 6:32 to play in the game.
A pair of free throws and a lay-up from Lumberton’s Megan Skipper and Melody Hunt, sparked a 13-0 run over a four-minute span, forcing Scotland coach David Brooks to call a time-out with 2:32 left and his team down 32-18.
Kadjejah McRae led the Lady Scots with eight points. Barnes and Cousar chipped in four and three respectively.
Jordan Jones led both teams in scoring with 14 points, including 10 in the deciding fourth quarter. Hunt scored nine with Taylor McBryde and Skipper added six and five points.
