State and local officials are scheduled to get an update today on the airport's runway project.

Laurinburg-Maxton Airport commissioners and a representative with the N.C. Division of Aviation will hear a presentation from W.K. Dickson. The Wilmington-based engineering firm will discuss its proposal for resurfacing the local runway.

State aviation officials consider the runway to be in the worst condition of any runway in North Carolina.

The initial estimate for replacing the runway was around $20 million as the airport was hoping to install a concrete runway rated at 210,000 pounds.

Through a process known as rubblization, they believe the current runway can be replaced with an asphalt runway for less than half that figure.

Rubblization is a process where the concrete runway would be broken up into pieces about a foot wide, then have asphalt laid overtop.

Breaking up the concrete is supposed to prevent reflective cracking, an issue caused by concrete and asphalt responding differently to temperature changes, according to airport officials.

The current runway was built in 1942 and had an expected life span of 20 years.

Commissioners will also discuss the latest water toxicity tests, installing a new security system at the airport's waste water treatment plant and the lease agreement with Scotland Aero Services, the airports fixed-base operator.

The Laurinburg-Maxton Airport Commission meets at noon on the fourth Thursday of each month at the airport terminal at 16701 Airport Road, Maxton.
