Cooking with Class, an ongoing initiative sponsored by the Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program of the Scotland County Cooperative Extension Service for teen mothers and mothers to be, honored its latest graduating class Jan. 7 with a dinner celebration in the education room of the Scotland County Health Department. The class, designed to educate young women in cooking methods, kitchen hygiene, nutrition and kitchen safety, is intended "to enhance the knowledge of young mothers in today's society", according to Instructor Umeko Terry.

"We educate them on how to prepare meals, and we also help them learn ways to teach their kids good habits in the kitchen," Terry said. "It's all designed to enhance the overall health and well being of both the parents and their children."

Graduate Nefertiti Campbell said the experience was beneficial.

"I learned how to budget money, as well as being taught how to prepare nutritious snacks," she said. "'Cooking with Class' was an enjoyable experience; I'd recommend it 100 percent to young women starting families."

In addition to their certificates, the four graduates received cookbooks at the graduation dinner. Student Jonetta Covington won a drawing for a gift card from Wal-Mart.

Classes will resume in February. Registration is free. For more information contact Terry at 277-2422.
