The Scotland County Highland Games committee will be holding its first meeting of the year on Jan. 26 at 6:30 p.m. at Scotland Place on Turnpike Road.
As the group begins plans for the second annual event in 2010, they are seeking new committee members and volunteers who would be interested in becoming involved with the organization.
“I think a lot of people were somewhat surprised with the size, scope, and quality of our first event back in October, but things like this take a lot of people to make possible. Since the success of our inaugural event we have had a lot of folks who indicated their interest in becoming involved with our group and hope that anyone with interest– of Scottish background or not – will come out to our first meeting to find out more and become involved. We welcome anyone with interest, and no previous experience in such events is necessary,” said Games Chairman Bill Caudill.
Committee members and other volunteers aided in tasks ranging from patron hospitality, assistance with staging games events, publicity, site layout and planning, as well as securing volunteers for necessary services such as parking and ticket sales among many other tasks necessary to stage a large event. “We had a very productive group of people who came together to produce an event which truly highlighted Laurinburg and Scotland County in the best way possible, but we were stretched to the limits in terms of the personnel needed to execute the event. As we are certain that the Games will grow, we’re hoping that there may be folks in the area who would like to become involved in this, one of the premier public events offered in Scotland County,” Caudill added.
The 2010 Scotland County Highland Games will take place on October 2, 2010. Special events such as the sponsor’s reception and other “new” events for 2010 will also take place on Friday, October 1. A Ceilidh (Scottish social gathering featuring music and entertainment) will follow the Games on the evening of October 2 at Cypress Bend Vineyards.
The Scotland County Highland Games committee meets monthly, with additional meetings as necessary closer to the event date.
