Willie Stanford, 21, of 218 S. Chestnut Drive, shot himself in his bedroom when four U.S. marshals came to his home looking for him at 1:21 p.m., according to a police report.
Lumberton police Lt. Johnny Barnes said that a woman answered the door when the U.S. marshals arrived and while they were speaking to her, they heard a single gunshot.
The U.S. marshals entered the home and found Stanford suffering from a gunshot wound to his chest, according to Barnes.
Emergency medical services, Lumberton police, and sheriff’s deputies responded, according to Barnes, and EMS personnel determined Stanford was dead.
Stanford was charged with first-degree murder and armed robbery in the shooting death of 19-year-old Austin Hunt of 10865 Deep Branch Road.
Lumberton city Councilman Erich Hackney, who is an investigator with the District Attorney’s Office, spoke with the woman at Stanford’s home whom he identified as Stanford’s girlfriend. She told Hackney that Stanford returned home for the first time since the murder occurred at about 4 a.m. Thursday.
“He initially said he was tired of running and was going to give himself up to authorities,” Hackney said.
Barnes said that Stanford’s girlfriend will not face any charges. He did not release her name.
