A water truck responding to a fire near Maxton overturned, injuring two Queheel firefighters.

Queheel fire truck 1520 was traveling south down Highway 130 when the driver lost control of the vehicle, according to officials.

The top of the cab was sheered off in the wreck, the water tank twisted and separated from the front.

The truck appeared to have skidded after it began to overturn, damaging pavement and leaving pieces of debris scattered for about a hundred yards.

A medivac helicopter arrived to airlift one firefighter while the other was taken to Scotland Memorial Hospital by ambulance.

Rescue personnel and onlookers crowded the scene, with about 75 people being at the site.

Numerous rescue squads, fire departments and law agencies responded to the wreck.

Officials with the Queheel Fire Department seemed distraught and declined to comment at the scene.

Highway patrolmen were still investigating the incident and would not comment.
