Carol Ann Lentz said Laurinburg residents may make donations to aid the victims at City Hall as well as at The Scotland County Red Cross office in Laurinburg.
The disaster has devastated much of the impoverished country's capital and killed thousands. Officials fear more than 100,000 people have died as a result of Tuesday's 7.0-magnitude earthquake in Haiti.
"We are so grateful to City Manager Ed Burchins and the city for partnering with us," Lentz said. "They are allowing the city to serve as a drop-off point for donations when people come to pay a bill at the office or at the drive-thru. It will serve as another avenue for helping."
Officials fear more than 100,000 people have died as a result of Tuesday's 7.0-magnitude earthquake in Haiti.
The capital, Port-au-Prince, "is flattened," said Haiti's consul general to the U.N., Felix Augustin, who said hospitals are gone, and medical supplies and heavy equipment are desperately needed.
The country's prime minister said the death toll could be in the hundreds of thousands.
"I hope that is not true, because I hope the people had the time to get out," Prime Minister Jean-Max Bellerive told reporters.
Red Cross officials say a monetary gift may be the best way to help those in need.
"The American Red Cross honors donor intent," Lentz said.
The American Red Cross has already pledged $1 million to assist those in Haiti.
The Red Cross is also:
Making available all the relief supplies at its warehouse in Panama (enough for
5,000 families) in support of relief efforts. These supplies include blankets,
kitchen sets, and water containers to meet immediate needs of survivors.
Sending a disaster specialist immediately to Haiti to support response efforts.
Putting several experienced disaster specialists on standby to be deployed if
requested.
Putting staff on the ground in Haiti and is working to obtain information on the
situation.
Monitoring the situation and communicating with the Haiti Red Cross and International Federation for future immediate action.
Donations can also be made to the American Red Cross, P O Box 37243, Washington, D.C. 20013, or by phone at 1-800-REDCROSS or 1-800-257-7575 (Spanish), or online at www.redcross.org".
