Hardwood floors can be real unforgiving and Tuesday night, three players in the Scotland-Pinecrest game felt the effects, including one who had to go to the emergency room.

In a very physical match-up, the Lady Scots came out of the battle on top with a 42-35 win over the Lady Patriots.

The win moves Scotland to 10-4 and 2-0 in the Southeastern Conference. Pinecrest falls to 7-7 and 0-2 in conference.

“They’re big and they’re aggressive,” Lady Scots coach David Johnson said about his opposition. “They came out quick in the first quarter and we didn’t really adjust to it well. It was one of those game we it really took us some time to get our composure and get our rhythm.”

Scotland would endure an almost five-minute shooting drought in the first quarter before it was broken on back-to-back baskets from Brittany Dockery.

The senior forward led the team with nine points before leaving early in the third with a contusion on her left thigh and is expected to be out for the next week, according to Johnson.

The first incident on the hardwood took place late in the second quarter when Jonissa Monley drove to the basket got called for a charging foul when she collided with Jennie Foy.

Foy’s head smacked the floor and she laid unconscious for a couple of minutes. She had to be taken to the emergency room and did not return.

Less than four minutes later, the next incident occurred when Tierra Pate of Scotland and Keegan Lynch of Pinecrest went up for a rebound at the same time, collided and went down and hit their heads on the floor.

Both girls were slow to get up, but got up under their own power. Pate returned a couple of minutes later while Lynch did not return.

“Our problem occurred when we lost both of guards to injuries,” Pinecrest coach Alvita Thomas said about what happened down the stretch. “We were already missing one of our top bench players (Janea Williams) after she got injured Friday night (vs. Lumberton).”

At the time of the second collision, the Lady Patriots were up by a point (27-26) before a basket from Royalanda Odom and a lay-up from Shae Barnes made it a three-point Lady Scots lead, 30-27, with under two minutes to play in the third.

After taking a one-point lead (32-31) into the fourth, Scotland outscored Pinecrest, 10-4.

After being shook up, Pate came back in and scored five of her seven points following the collision. Monley added six points for the Lady Scots.

Cayla Herm paced the Lady Patriots with 10 points.

Scotland will be back in action at home for the second of a three-game home stand when they take on Hoke County at 6 pm.
