HAMLET- The Scotland ninth-grade girls basketball team made it a New Year’s resolution to get back into the win column.

Round one was a success.

The Lady Scots outscored Richmond, 6-4, in the overtime period, picking up a 30-28 win Thursday evening.

The win snaps a four-game losing streak for Scotland, who improves to 2-5 on the season. The Lady Raiders fell to 5-3.

Following a 5-5 tie at the end of the first quarter, the Lady Scots took a one-point lead (10-9) with 2:57 to play in the half before a Richmond field goal put the lead back in their favor, 11-10, at halftime.

The lead would change on three separate occasions in the third quarter before an Alexsa Consar basket made it a one-point Scotland lead (14-13) with less than 20 seconds to play in the quarter.

The Lady Scots took that one-point lead into the final seven minutes of play.

Scotland gained a three-point advantage, 16-13, on a basket from Kadejah Murne before a field goal from Richmond’s Damajah Underwood cut the lead to a point with 4:45 to play.

Following a three from Murne, Heather Locklear tied the game at 19 with 3:08 to play on a three-pointer.

Murne, who scored eight of her game-high 12 points in the fourth, put her team up by two (24-22) with 34 seconds left before a basket from Kadijah Harrington with under two seconds to play in the game, sent the game into overtime, all tied at 24.

With the Scotland clinging to a two-point lead, 30-28, with under 10 seconds to play in overtime, Murne stepped in front of the Richmond inbounds pass and stole the ball allowing the Lady Scots to escape with the win.

“The last two games we’ve led at the half and couldn’t hang on, so we worked on some things to help avoid that and it worked out for us tonight,” said Scotland coach David Brooks said.

Along with Murne, Kaylan Ganus finished with eight points for Scotland, including a pair of treys, Consar added six while Alea Barnes chipped in four.

Underwood paced the Lady Raiders with 10 points.

The Lady Scots will be off until Thursday when they host Hoke County at 4:30 pm.
