A South Carolina woman employed by a local doctor's office is accused of prescription fraud, according to sheriff's deputies.

Kristi Riddle Chavis, 35, Crestview Drive, Bennettsville, was arrested Monday night and charged with six counts of obtaining a controlled substance by fraud and six counts of insurance fraud, according to an arrest report. She was placed in Scotland County jail under a $10,000 secured bond.

"She had picked up prescriptions from a pharmacy that were supposedly called in by a provider but the provider never authorized them," Sheriff's Investigator David Salzlein said.

During a five month period, Chavis obtained six different prescriptions for Hydrocodone, a schedule III controlled substance, Salzlein said. Five of the prescriptions were for 120 pills each and the other prescription was for 90 pills, meaning Chavis illegally obtained 690 pills.

Salzlein says the popular painkiller typically goes for $5 to $8 when sold individually.

Chavis set up the prescriptions somehow through her employer, Scotland Orthopedics, Salzlein said, but he said he could not elaborate without hindering the prosecution of this case. The investigator was uncertain if Chavis was still employed by the doctor's office.

The insurance fraud charges came from Chavis using her medical insurance to aid in paying for the fraudulent prescriptions.

Salzlein would not release how the sheriff's office received information on this crime as he felt it could hinder ongoing drug investigations.

Prescription fraud is a class 1 misdemeanor under North Carolina General Statutes unless it is determined the law was intentionally violated, in which case the charge is a Class I felony.
