Members of the Laurinburg Rotary Club enjoyed a holiday treat with an ENCORE Christmas performance.

Two members of ENCORE! Community Theatre acted out a skit with a new take on the birth of Christ while the Modrell family singers – Pastor Charles and Tina Modrell and their children, Chase, Tara, Christina and Tabitha – sang Christmas carols for the group at the Clinton Inn on Tuesday.

The skit, which was developed partially by ENCORE! Players, was the story of the innkeeper who let Joseph and Mary stay in a barn the night of Jesus' birth.

The innkeeper starts the story as a shrewd businessman whose main concern is money and had little time for religion. After being visited by those who followed a star over top of his barn and hearing the story of the birth of Christ, he changed to a man who was touched by faith.

The performance simple, with only two actors – Allen Johnson and Chris Woods – and it didn't last more than ten minutes, but it seemed to touch the hearts of those in the room as Rotarians were beaming and applauding.

The skit was sandwiched between two performances by the Modrell family, who was referred to by several as being a more talented group than the sining Trapp family in The Sound of Music.

The group sang five classic carols and received even more praise and applause than the skit.
