"We are very excited that Santa and Mrs. Claus could join us for a few hours this evening," display creator Michael Adams said. "They can only be here for one night, though, since Santa has to get back to the North Pole and get all those toys ready for Christmas."
Santa will approach the cars as they pass through the display, which surrounds Adams' residence, where he will talk to the children and pass out candy canes. Motorists and passengers are asked to stay in their vehicles at all times.
Adams expressed his "great pleasure" with this year's attendance.
"We have had a record breaking year already," Adams said. "We had already passed the 10,000 visitor mark by the first week in December, and the numbers are growing. It's been unreal."
Adams began Candy Cane Wonderland in 2006 with a modest budget, drawing what Adams estimates to have been about 2,000 visitors. In 2007, some 5,000 traveled through the attraction with more than 10,000 visitors driving through the display for the Christmas 2008 season.
Hundreds of cars visit the site each evening, according to Adams.
The inspiration for Candy Cane Wonderland came from a similar display Adams visited as a child.
"When I was little, my family would visit a Christmas attraction in Hartsville, S.C.," Adams said.
"I loved the lights and the colors, and the fact that you could stay in your car and drive through to see it. It became a childhood dream of mine to duplicate the display."
To visit Candy Cane Wonderland from Laurinburg, take Highway 401 South toward Bennettsville, and turn right at Poole's Body Shop on Leisure Road. Go to Highway 381 and turn right at the stop sign, and then take the second paved road, Spice Road, which forks to the left. Turn right at the stop sign at Adamsville Road, and then take the first paved left onto Family Farm Road. The display is approximately one and one half miles on the right.
The attraction is open from 6 to 10 p.m. nightly, and will continue through Jan. 1.
