Letter to the editor and folks of Scotland County,

I wanted to take the time to tell you about the great staff here at Scotland Memorial Hospital. My 13 year old daughter Kailey was seen at The Purcell Clinic by Dr. Gallab for abdominal pain. Dr. Gallab was very complete with her examination and wanted to send Kailey to Scotland Memorial for a CT scan. Upon arrival, the volunteers greeted us with a smile, and we were promptly registered by friendly staff. Once in CT, Lynn Soles explained the procedure to a 13 year old so she would understand, and Vaughnda Lowery greeted us with her smile. They were wonderful! Unfortunately, the CT scan showed pelvic cyst masses. The radiologist Dr. Mcdevitt quickly called and spoke with Dr. Gallab, who determined Kailey needed further testing. An ultrasound was ordered and done by Tena Simmons at the Imaging Center, and again, Tena was prompt and caring. Kailey was in Dr. Kohn's office the next morning, and this is when we received the news of surgery and questionable cancer. Kailey was sent back to Scotland Memorial for blood work and pre-op registration. The pre-op staff, Ms. Carrie, Ms. Lisa, and along with the other staff were so compassionate with Kailey's situation putting her at ease, as well as the lab tech. On Monday, Dec.14th, Kailey arrived in outpatient surgery, where we were once again greeted with smiles, and a comforting pat on the shoulder to me just to say it's going to be ok. Once Kailey was transferred to the OR holding area, along with her father and I, we met John King, the nurse anesthetist. Mr. King took the time to explain to us what his responsibility was to Kailey. Mr. King then stated that he "would take care and treat her as if she was his own." That meant so much to us! In recovery, Kim Mintz was her nurse and was so good to Kailey. Kim even kept me posted during Kailey's surgery. After surgery was completed, my family and I were greeted by Dr. Kohn, who had a huge smile from ear to ear upon his face and gave us the great outcome of my daughter's surgery, and we rejoiced together! I wanted to express that, from start to finish, from the doctor's offices to different departments of Scotland Memorial, with this emotional experience with my daughter, we were treated with respect and so much compassion. And I would like to thank everyone involved. I am proud of Scotland Memorial. Job well done!!! And as for Kailey, she's recovering well, and will have a normal, healthy life!

Thank you for your time,

Amy Watts
