Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Dec. 19, 2009 at Laurel Hill Baptist Church officiated by the Rev. Don Malpass. Burial will follow the service at Scotland Cemetery with full Military Honors.
Mr. Matthews was born in Spartanburg, S.C. to the late Leonard and Lois Matthews. He retired from the United States Army after serving his country for 24 years. He was awarded the Bronze Star for Valor among many other medals for his service in Vietnam. He was an avid outdoorsman enjoying fishing and all other sports. But most of all he loved spending time with his children and grandchildren. Mr. Matthews was a faithful member of Laurel Hill Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Helen Matthews of the home; two sons, Donnie Flournoy and wife Lori of Marston and Michael L. Flournoy and wife Kris of Azle, Texas; a daughter, Donna Lynn Aumoeualogo and husband Matoka of Laurel Hill; a sister, Barbara Author of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
The family will receive friends one hour (1-2 p.m.) before the service at Laurel Hill Baptist Church.
Memorials may be made to the Laurel Hill Baptist Church Building Fund or to Hospice of Scotland County.
