James Walter “J.W.” Norton, age 71 of Laurel Hill passed away on Saturday, Dec. 12, 2009 at the Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 16, 2009 at the Richard Boles Funeral Service Chapel officiated by the Rev. J.W. Williams. Burial will follow the service at Peele’s Chapel Cemetery in Laurel Hill.

Mr. Norton was born July 19, 1938 in Richmond County, son of the late Walter Norton and Annie Willard Norton Scott. He was a retired truck driver and the owner and operator of Norton’s Flag Car Service. He also faithfully attended Peele’s Chapel Wesleyan Church.

JW loved his family and loved helping others. He enjoyed going to gospel singings and spending time with his grand babies.

In addition to his parents, JW was also preceded in death by his daughters, Sarah Ann Norton Smith and Glenda Kay Locklear; a sister, Mary Ellen Clark; a grandson, Michael Hoyt Lester; a daughter-in-law, Angela Norton; and a special brother-in-law, Edgberth Lockley.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Faye LeCroy Norton of the home; sons Michael Lester and wife Melissa of Laurel Hill, Jeff Norton of Laurel Hill, and James Walter Norton, Jr. of Mt. Holly; daughters Jamie Medlin of Laurel Hill and Evelyn Jean Brown of Mt. Holly; brothers Joe Norton, Ricky Wayne Scott and Willie Scott all of Rockingham; sisters Dora Hall of Rockingham and Stella Lockley of Laurel Hill; 15 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 15 at Richard Boles Funeral Service.

The family requests that memorials be made in memory of Mr. Norton to the Peele’s Chapel Wesleyan Church, Laurel Hill, NC 28351.
