LUMBERTON-The Scotland ninth-grade girls basketball team fell behind to Lumberton early in the first quarter and never find their offensive rhythm, losing to the Lady Pirates, 51-17, Thursday afternoon. The loss drops them to 1-3 on the year.

Leading by ten (13-3) after the first seven minutes of play, the Lady Pirates went on a 10-0 run to open up a 20-point lead (23-3) with 2:13 left to play in half.

Emotions would get the better of the Lady Scots late in the second when they wee whistled for a technical foul.

Miranda Hammonds of Lumberton took advantage of the situation and buried a pair free throws to increas the lead to 12 (25-3). Hammonds would finish with 12 points.

Scotland avoided going scoreless in the second on a field goal from Alexsa Consar with less than 20 seconds left in the half.

The Lady Pirates, Taylor McBryde, got the home crowd into a frenzy when buried a three-pointer from just inside the half court as time expired in the second quarter.

The Lady Scots went almost six minutes in the third quarter without ascoring a point until a basket from Kaylan Owens put an end to the drought with 1:10 to play in the third. Scotland trailed, 38-9, going ton the final quarter of play.

Melody Hunt led the way for Lumberton with 13 points. McBryde finished with eight while Jordan Jones chipped in six.

Consar and Owens paced Scotland with six points apiece. Alea Barnes added three points.

The Lady Scots will look to pick up their second win of season when they host Pinecrest Tuesday afternoon. They’ll turnaround and host Purnell Swett on Thursday.
