A reporter and area native is plans to return for a Laurinburg talent show.

Tonya Brown, reporter for Channel 15 WPDE, will emcee Laurinburg's Got Talent.

Brown is originally from Bennettsville, S.C., and grew up shopping in Laurinburg.

She remembers buying her school clothes at Belk and going to Walmart, and being an avid fan of the local Pizza Inn.

"I feel I have a connection to the community," Brown said. "I agreed to emcee because I believe in helping with community events."

She still visits regularly visits Laurinburg, doing business with local hair salons and and covering big stories in the area.

Brown has spent the last decade reporting, currently working out of the Florence office for WPDE as a general assignment reporter. She has a bachelors degree in communications from Morris College.

The talent show will be held Jan. 30 with a prize of $500. Applications are due Nov. 30. There will be $5 registration fee.

Graham says there may be auditions, depending on the quantity of submissions. He expects most participants will sing, dance or recite poetry and will have judges that are qualified in those areas, though he welcomes people with other talents as well.

The event's organizer, Nelson Graham, says someone put up the prize money because they were interested in seeing how a local talent show would look.

"I had this person that donate money that said let's do a Laurinburg Idol," Graham said. "He just wants to see what will happen and how the event will go."

Applications can be picked up at Willow Place, 1703 Stonewall Road, Laurinburg.
