ELON—Freshman forward Natia Gasque notched her first collegiate double-double for visiting St. Andrews Presbyterian College in a 104-27 loss at NCAA Division I Elon.
The Phoenix (2-1) received points from 15 different players while the Lady Knights (0-2) had five players that all gutted out 40 minutes of action.
Friday’s contest marked the first time the St. Andrews women’s basketball program has competed against an NCAA D-I foe in regular season play in at least seven years.
Gasque had a game-high 11 rebounds for the Knights but Elon held a commanding 56-32 advantage on the glass. Gasque completed her double-double with a team-high 10 points.
St. Andrews fought tough in the first half keeping the score manage, 33-16, at halftime. However, the much deeper Elon squad outscored the Knights 71-11 in the final frame.
Sophomore Brittany Roberts canned eight points including the Lady Knights only three-pointer. Senior Jaquese Smith and freshman Kayla McBath both scored four points. McBath had seven rebounds and Roberts pulled down four. Freshman Sylvee Ubiera chipped in with two rebounds, one point, one block, and one steal.
Ali Ford led Elon with a game-high 23 points including an impressive seven 3-pointers. The Phoenix hit a total of 14 three-pointers. Julie Taylor (14 points), Urysla Cotton (12), and Kelsey Evans (10) all reached double figures in points.
Lei Lei Hairston had a game-high six steals as SAPC was victimized by 38 turnovers.
Elon shot 48.1% (39-of-81) while the Knights were held to 19.1% (9-of-47) shooting.
St. Andrews begins Conference Carolinas play tonight, when the Lady Knights entertain Mount Olive College at 5:30 p.m.
