A 16 year old from the U.S. Virgin Islands accused in stabbing a Laurinburg Institute basketball player was not a member of the basketball team hemself, according to the Laurinburg Institute.
De-Shawn Omar Samuels was a student enrolled at Laurinburg Institute but he was not a member of the basketball team, according to Frances McDuffie at the Institute.
Police said Samuels was also a basketball player.
Samuels was arrested Wednesday night and charged with assault with a deadly weapon with the intent to kill inflicting serious injury for stabbing 19-year old Dontavus Jamar Lee, of Roberta, Ga., according to Laurinburg police.
"We are saddened that the incident took place at all by any member of our institution, especially since we feel it is not a reflection of our student body as a whole," McDuffie said.
Parents have told the school that Lee has been released from the hospital and is recovering at home, McDuffie said.
