The Tuesday Cruisers, a classic cars enthusiast group that meets each Tuesday at Smithfield’s Bar-B-Q in Laurinburg, has made their annual contribution to the Christmas Cheer program of Church Community Services. The check for $4,200 will be used to purchase children's Christmas gifts and clothes.

"The Christmas Cheer program has been blessed again this year with a donation of money to purchase toys and/or clothing for children so that they can have a better Christmas," Eutha Tart, volunteer director of the program said. Referring to all donors to the program she said, "Through Christ the possibilities are endless."

Church Community Services Director Leslie Womack thanked the Tuesday Cruisers group for their donation.

"We couldn't get along without them," Womack said. "They work very hard to put the money together, and always bless us with a gift."

Each year, the Christmas Cheer program aligns needy families with organizations and individuals who "adopt" these families to provide food and Christmas presents for children.

"We are looking for folks who will 'Christmas Adopt' a family in need," Womack said. "Last year we had 422 families referred who needed assistance, and 130 of those were adopted. Thanks to the donations we received from Tuesday Cruisers and other organizations, we were able to provide Christmas gift items to the remaining families as well."

The number of needy families on this year's list is increasing, according to Womack.

"Anyone interested in participating can choose a family to assist, or we will pick a family for you," Womack said. "At last count we had between 150 and 200 families waiting to be adopted, and these numbers will definitely grow. If you, your family, Sunday School class, or organization wishes to purchase items and food to donate to these families, it is always a blessing."

Delivery of presents and food can be made by the adopting family or by the Church Community Services organization. Families can also meet each other at the CCS office if requested.

The Christmas Cheer office receives applications for potential adoptee families from the Department of Social Services, Four County, the Scotland County Health Department, Scotland County schools, and Church Community Service member churches.

For more information on adopting a family through the Christmas Cheer program, phone Tart at 277-0026 or Womack at 276-8330 .
