A basketball player at the Laurinburg Institute is in custody after his teammate was hospitalized with stab wounds, according to Laurinburg police.

De-Shawn Omar Samuel, 16, of the U.S. Virgin Islands was arrested Wednesday night and charged with assault with a deadly weapon with the intent to kill inflicting serious injury for stabbing 19-year old Dontavus Jamar Lee, of Roberta, Ga., according to Detective Chris Young, LPD.

The Tigers played junior varsity Knights basketball team at St. Andrews Presbyterian College and lost Tuesday night, Young said.

Samuel blamed Lee for the loss and argued with him after the game, an argument that was brought back to the Laurinburg Institute's campus at 125 McGirt's Bridge Road.

An altercation started between the two and Samuel stabbed Lee repeatedly with a pen, Young said.

Lee was transported to Scotland Memorial Hospital by the mother of a fellow player where they treated him for lacerations and puncture wounds to his head and neck, Young said.

The Laurinburg detective said part of the seriousness of the charges came from wounds on Lee's temple and the back of his head.

Samuel was also treated at Scotland Memorial, receiving stitches in his mouth.

Young says Samuel was placed in Scotland County jail under a $100,000 secured bond.

Laurinburg Institute headmaster Frank McDuffie, Jr. could not be reached for comment.
