CANTON, OH- Derrick (Justin) McLean, of Laurel Hill, North Carolina and a freshman wide receiver on the Malone University football team, was recently recognized as the Mid-States Football Association Mideast League Offensive Player of the Week after his outstanding all-around performance in the Pioneers’ 57-35 win at Olivet Nazarene (IL) University on Saturday.

McLean broke both the Malone and MSFA records for all-purpose yards in Saturday’s offensive shootout with a total output of 346 yards. He caught eight passes for 186 yards and one touchdown, gained 49 yards on one rush while also tallying 111 return yards on special teams. In addition to establishing a new Malone mark for all-purpose yards, McLean also posted the third-highest, single-game receiving yardage total in program history.

McLean wrapped up an impressive freshman season with 34 catches for 518 yards and four touchdowns. He also made an impact on special teams by averaging 25.8 yards on 22 kickoff returns and 7.3 yards on nine punt returns.

Malone won two of its last three contests to end the 2009 campaign with a 4-6 overall record and a 2-5 mark in the MSFA Mideast.
