Amber Watkins, the 2008-2009 Teacher of the Year for Scotland County Schools, is one of two finalists for the Sandhills/South Central Region of North Carolina, the school system announced Wednesday.
Watkins is a social studies teacher at Scotland Early College High School at Richmond Community College.
Watkins has served as an educator for the past five years in Scotland County. She joined the Early College two years ago. Watkins could not be reached for comment.
That Watkins is being considered for regional Teacher of the Year is a boost to Scotland County Schools, according to Community Schools Coordinator Andy Cagle.
"It's a validation for all of the hard work that Scotland County teachers put in for our students," Cagle said. "Amber Watkins representing the school system is not just a big step for her but also a big step for the school district."
During the finalist process, a selection committee for the region will spend a day at Scotland Early College interviewing students, staff and parents and observing Watkins teach.
