The clinic is sponsoring a gold sale today from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. It will be held at the Storytelling Arts Center in downtown Laurinburg.
Kathy Ragsdale, who serves on the clinic's board of directors, said the group is buying gold at current market prices.
"We want people to bring in their gold and we will buy it on the spot," Ragsdale said. "We felt like people might be looking for some extra cash this time of the year so we thought we would try gold."
Teresa McCade at Bob Jeweler's will serve as the buyer.
"We tried contacting other buyers, but Teresa has agreed to give us a larger percentage because she is a big supporter," Ragsdale said. "We feel it is a win-win situation for everyone."
Proceeds from the sale will be used to help the clinic provide health care to the uninsured.
"With the fact that unemployment has reached such a level, we are trying to do whatever we can to raise funds to support our ongoing operations," said Donna Young, clinic executive director. "Gold sales are certainly popular now so we decided to give it a try."
Scotland Community Health Clinic serves adult residents of Scotland County who are without medical insurance and who fall at or below 150 percent of federal poverty level standards.
Patients must first call for an appointment to fill out all appropriate paperwork. Once a patient is approved, they are then scheduled with a physician or mid-level provider. The clinic provides routine care and assists in the management of chronic diseases. Once a month, free mammograms are provided through the Scotland Memorial Foundation. A special women's clinic is also held monthly to help educate and answer questions regarding family planning, hormone replacement and other concerns. Annual physicals and pap smears are also provided during this clinic.
Laboratory services and basic imaging services are also provided free of charge. Prescription assistance is available for those medications that have no generic equivalent.
