The regional composed of 23 teams from three conferences from the Southeast including Conference Carolinas, Peach Belt Conference, and the South Atlantic Conference. All teams were competing for a bid to the NCAA National Championships in Evansville, Indiana. The top three men’s teams and top two women’s teams earned tickets to the finals.
WOMEN
Junior Alexandra King led the St. Andrews women’s cross country team in the Southeast Regional with a 61st place individual finish out of 162 endurance runners. King posted a personal record time of 26:27 in the 6,000-meter race.
Sophomore Anna Egeln also had a personal best in the extended distance race, crossing the finish line in 28 minutes and eight seconds.
Junior Danielle Martin and sophomore Rebecca Maye were the next two Lady Knights harriers to complete the trek. Martin clocked in at 31:01 while Maye posted a time of 31:23 in her first 6k collegiate race.
Lauren Crabb, the Lady Knights only senior on a young roster, completed SAPC’s team scoring at 33:35. Freshman Amanda Espinosa and sophomore Amy Tripson crossed the finish line together at 36:42 to complete the running for St. Andrews.
MEN
Junior Doug Holt led the St. Andrews men’s cross country team at the Southeast Regional with a 38th place finish out of 159 harriers. Holt traversed the 10,000-meter course around the Wingate Athletics Complex with a blazing time of 34:41. Holt led the Knights in all six races in 2009.
The junior duo of James Walls and Tommy Wilson were the next two SAPC endurance runners to complete the demanding competition. Walls finished 68th overall with a 36 minute flat time and Wilson claimed 90th with a speed of 36:56.
The Knights had a pair of seniors that were competing in their final race for St. Andrews. James Lloyd and Brad McKee were the final two remaining members of the 2006 St. Andrews men’s cross country team that won the program’s only Southeast Regional title. Lloyd was the Knights fourth quickest entrant with a time of 38:01 while McKee broke the 40 minute barrier in a 10k race for the first time in his collegiate career with a time of 39:06.
Junior Jon Lecker completed SAPC’s scoring running with a time of 38:16. Freshman Will James, who missed the Knights last race due to injury, posted a benchmark time of 39:19 in his first collegiate 10k race.
