Citing tough competition and an even tougher economy, Video's Unlimited in Laurinburg will close its doors Saturday night.

The store's owner, Chris Futrell, said employees were notified on Monday. There are signs on the door announcing the closure.

Futrell said a number of factors contributed to the decision to close the store after 18 years. Competition from the likes of Netflix, Red Box as well as online streaming and the recession made it difficult for the small independent video store to survive.

"The business just wasn't there," Futrell said. "There are just a lot more options today than there were we when opened. The industry has changed so much and it is one of the reasons that there are so few small stores."

The store will reopen on Nov. 13 to sell off its inventory of more than 17,000 DVDs and VHS tapes.

"We will reopen at noon that Friday and keep the doors open as long as it takes to sell everything," Futrell said. "We will be selling games, movies, fixtures and equipment. It is hard to believe how much we packed up in 18 years."

The store is at 1665 S. Main St. in a structure that looks like a huge red barn and formerly housed the Music Master.

There are seven people working at the store.

"Some of our customers are going to be shocked, some will understand and some will wonder how we stayed this long."
