After facing a stiff test in their first round match, Scotland looked at some little things that they could zero in on against their second round opponent.

Boy, did they make Ashley pay for it.

The Lady Scots came out firing on all cylinders at the net in the first game and never let up, defeating the Lady Eagles, 3-0, in front of a very animated Scotland crowd Tuesday night.

"We were able jump out early," Scotland Coach David Barnes said. "That was one thing I harped on about in practice. In a couple of our recent matches, we have started out slow, and we do not need to do that, especially the deeper we get into the playoffs."

Scotland (24-1) started off game one with a 6-2 lead and went up 12-5, forcing Ashley to call a time-out. Following the break, the Lady Scots continued to exploit the Lady Eagles at the net, going up, 18-8. Ashley got as close as 21-16 before Scotland called a time-out. That would be as close as the Lady Scots would let them get, taking game one, 25-18. Whitney Campbell led the way for the Southeastern Conference's number-one seed, with 13 kills in the match.

Like in the previous game, Scotland went on the attack early in game two, leading by as many as eleven (19-8) and took care of Ashley (11-6), 25-17.

"We did a good job of getting good serving early, good passing and we had some great swings at the net," Barnes said of the first two games. "It got kind of tight in game three, but, our ball control was good all night long. We were able get a good setting game out of our setter, Candace Carter, all night long."

After the Lady Eagles took an early 4-2 lead in game three, the Lady Scots re-took the lead, 12-9, midway through the game but could not quite put Ashley away, as they got as close as three in the final game. In the end, Scotland was too much, taking the game and the set by a final of 25-21.

"Our good serving led to bad ball control for them," said Barnes on one of the main factors in the game. "We were smart on balls that looked like they were going to go out-of-bounds where as they went for alot of balls that were going out and it threw off their structure which led to an advantage for us."

Jessica Bowen chipped in six kills and a pair of blocks in the win for the Lady Scots. Taborah Hollingsworth led the way in blocking with five to go along with six kills. Shea Poage and Sarah Laviner had five and four kills, respectively. Laviner also added a pair of blocks.

Scotland advances to the third round of the 4-A state playoffs for the second year in a row. They will play the winner of the Jack Britt (19-4) and Hoggard (17-6) match Thursday at 6 p.m. Results from that match were not available at press time.
