James Calvin Boyd, 56, captured by the State Bureau of Investigation in Knightdale on Monday after eluding authorities since he tried to attack his wife and a relative last week, according to Capt. Kimothy Monroe.
Boyd was held by SBI and Wake County officials until Laurinburg police could pick him up, Monroe said,
Boyd is charged with attempted murder, first-degree burgloary, assault with a deadly weapon with the intent to kill and violating a domestic violence order.
Authorities say Boyd tried to kill his estranged wife, Alvina Boyd, and her brother on Wednesday, officials say. Both escaped harm.
James Boyd is in Scotland County jail under an $800,000 secured bond.
"I feel relieved, but more so I feel relieved for the family that had to live through this drama," Monroe said. "Domestic violence is something that is a very unique and delicate situation. Hopefully apprehending Boyd will resolve this in a peaceful manner."
He said Alvina Boyd gave investigators important information on the possible whereabouts of James Boyd, including that Boyd had family in Knightdale.
Monroe credited the Laurinburg Police Department's investigative unit with sifting through information and ultimately locating James Boyd.
"Mr. Boyd could not have been brought to justice without all the investigators involved, including Det. Young, Det. Gibson and Det. Longmire. who did an outstanding job."
James Boyd hacked open the door to his wife's residence at 12420 Purcell Road in Laurinburg at about 4 a.m. on Wednesday, police say.
James Boyd then told Alvina Boyd and her brother that he was was going to kill them and chased both through the house. They locked themselves first in a bedroom, then in a bathroom adjoining the bedroom.
James Boyd broke open the door to the bedroom but did not enter the bathroom, according to police. James Boyd left before police arrived.
Officials have characterized the incident as part of an ongoing domestic situation.
Alvina Boyd had taken out several previous warrants on her husband and had a standing restraining order against him. James Boyd no longer lives with his wife and police do not know his new address.
Boyd also has a history of assaulting authorities, according to the N.C. Department of Corrections.
He is currently on probation for assaulting an officer, and previously been convicted of both resisting officers and assaulting a policeman.
