Brian Butler, 26, of Bayfield Road, was arrested last week, according to a sheriff's report.
The incident involved a girl under the age of 14, according to Capt. David Newton.
The girl's family contacted the sheriff's department about the relationship, Newton said.
Statutory rape is considered a B1 felony if the victim is under the age of 16 and is at least six years younger than the person accused, according to the North Carolina General Statute.
The felony carries a minimum sentence of 12 years in prison and a maximum sentence of life imprisonment.
Butler was placed in Scotland County jail under a $20,000 bond.
