After suffering their first conference loss in four years last week, Scotland volleyball made a few changes going into the seasonal rubber match with Richmond.

The changes led to instant success for the Lady Scots.

Scotland (22-1) took game one convincingly and never looked back, winning 3-0 in the Southeastern Conference championship match. The tenth-ranked Lady Scots host the Falcons of Seventy-First High in the first round of the 4-A state playoffs Saturday at 6 p.m.

"We did alot of film work on them (Richmond). I knew what kind of rotations they would be in and I got the match-ups that I wanted at the net," said Scotland Coach David Barnes. "We were able to get our best server serving to start off.

"I told our girls it was important to hit them in the mouth early," he said.

Scotland jumped out to an early 6-1 lead in game one and continued to pile on points, on their way to a 25-14 win to go up 1-0.

Lady Raiders coach Wendy Wallace felt that her team was showing the effects of having their match go five games against Pinecrest less than 24 hours ago.

"I think after playing five games the night before, we came out a little tired. We didn't move our feet as well as we should have," said Wallace. "We didn't do well on serving tonight and they (Scotland) served the ball extremely well; took us right out of our offense."

Richmond (15-6) battled back in the next game, taking four of the first six points and even held an 18-17 advantage late in the game but the Lady Scots got it back together and took a 19-18 lead, forcing Coach Wallace to call a time-out. Scotland took six of the last nine points for the 25-21 win in the second game, which saw the score tied up nine different times.

"In game two, I was surprised they (Richmond) bounced back as well as they did," Barnes said on the comeback Richmond in game two. "They came back and it just challenged us more."

Like the second game, the Lady Raiders jumped out to the early lead before the Lady Scots came back to take an 18-16 lead before Richmond jumped back on top, 19-18. Scotland picked up a pair of kills to re-take the lead, 20-19 before a time-out by the Lady Scots. Despite t being tied on six different occasions in the final game, Scotland kept their composure down the stretch and pulled out a 25-23 win for their five consecutive conference tourney championship.

"They're coming off of beating us at their place and beating Pinecrest, they were on a roll," Barnes said. "We were able to get on them early. Josephine Yang started serving for us and picked up some quick points. We made some adjustments on blocking from the last time we played, changed up our defense and all of that stuff culminated with the right mixture."

Jessica Bowen led the way for Scotland with 14 kills to go along seven service points and a pair of blocks. Whitney Campbell chipped in 11 kills and Candace Carter added 31 setting assists. Sarah Laviner (four) and Josephine Yang (three) combined for seven of the teams' 10 aces on the night. Yang also led the way with eight service points while Decausha McLean added seven.
