Fifteen members of the girl scouts visited the Red Cross last week as a prerequisite to obtaining their "My Community" patch, where the scouts received information about how the charitable organization works. And due to a particular need of its own, the scouts were able to give something to the Red Cross in return.

"The scouts needed to visit a community organization as part of working toward their patch, so we decided to visit the Red Cross," Scout Leader Kathy McCallum said. "The girls were shown around the building and heard a presentation regarding what the Red Cross does to help during disasters. The girls were very interested in hearing this and asked a lot of questions."

The scouts had learned beforehand that the Red Cross had a need as well.

"We were told the Red Cross needed blankets, so each of the girls in the group donated a blanket to the organization," McCallum said. We brought 15 along with us, and have more to give since the girls who couldn't attend have theirs to donate as well."

Carol Ann Lentz, executive director of the Scotland County branch of the American Red Cross, enjoyed the visit by the scouts.

"We were very happy to receive both the girl scouts and their generous gift of blankets," Lentz said. "Their donations will be put to good use as the need arises, and we will let it be known that these items were donated by a local organization."
