Allison Barnes, a third grade teacher at Covington Street Elementary School, has been named the 2009 Outstanding Elementary Mathematics Teacher for Scotland County by the North Carolina Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCCTM).

The purpose of this award is to recognize and reward those elementary school teachers who make mathematics exciting and who nurture their students' enthusiasm by getting them involved in mathematics fairs, projects, and competitions which extend and enhance everyday classroom experiences.

“Alison Barnes consistently sets the standard for rigor through her systematic questioning techniques and real-world applications,” said Michelle Gray, the math instructional specialist for Scotland County Schools. “She meets the needs of the diverse learners in her classroom by offering hands-on mathematical explorations. We are so fortunate to have Mrs. Barnes working with the students of Scotland County to promote mathematical literacy.”

Barnes is an eight-year veteran of public education and is in her second year of teaching in Scotland County. In addition to being the NCCTM Outstanding Mathematics Teacher for Scotland County, she is also Covington Street’s teacher of the year for this school campaign.
