With that in mind, they all descended upon the old gym on the SHS campus Thursday to learn what they could to make informed college decisions from representatives from over 40 colleges and universities from North and South Carolina as part of a fall college day.
The event was sponsored by the Carolinas Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers (CACRAO) and included state and private technical and liberal arts colleges.
“We wanted to give our students some early exposure to what area colleges and universities have to offer so they can have all the relevant information in hand when they started applying for scholarships and to colleges,” said Dr. Patricia Powell, counselor for the Scotland High School of Business, Finance and Marketing. “Early exposure before next spring is key to our students making good colleges choices and having the things in place to apply for the college of their choice.”
“Today has been really great,” said Bianca Pate, a senior in the School of Math, Science and Technology, who is looking at Fayetteville State, UNC Wilmington and NC Central to continue her education. “With what I picked up today, I am going to go ahead and start applying to schools and find scholarships that will help with the costs.”
Renee McNeill, a senior in the School of Visual and Performing Arts, echoed Pate’s sentiments.
“It has been very helpful to see what each school offers,” said McNeill, who is narrowing her college choices from a list that includes Fayetteville State, NC Central, UNC Pembroke and Wingate. “I want to major in criminal justice so I have been able to see which schools offer what I am looking for and talk to people from those schools.”
