The Scotland High School men's varsity soccer team got its first win in the Southeastern Conference on Wednesday night.
The Scots (5-6-1 and 1-1 Southeastern Conf.) played with determination after getting down a goal midway through the second half.
Scotland's defense played hard throughout the whole game which helped Scotland get the win.
"The defense played excellent for us tonight," Head Coach Colin McDavid said. "Aaron Stevens, Joseph Prevatte, and Joe Sojka gave it all they could tonight and I am extremely happy for them."
The first half for the Scots looked like they were in for another long night against the Bucks. Hoke out shot Scotland nine to one, six of which being on goal. Hoke out possessed Scotland also while senior goalkeeper Josh Wheeler made some critical saves early on in the half to keep Scotland in the game. Scotland and Hoke would go into the half scoreless.
The second half was better for the Scots. Scotland possessed the ball more while scoring goals on top of that. Hoke would get on the board first known the less.
The Bucks scored in the 52nd minute after receiving their first corner kick of the second half. A Hoke player bent the corner kick in the back of the net past senior goalkeeper John Yarborough to put the Bucks up 1-0.
Scotland got it's first goal in three games after being shout out by Southern Lee and Pinecrest just 30 seconds later. Off the ensuing kickoff Scotland drove the ball down the field. After a throw in from Alex Fricke, Evgheny Khandoga crossed in a well driven ball to the 6-yard box where Balyn Krout would run onto the ball and headed it into the back of the net. The goal would be Krout's 13th goal of the season, and he was not done yet.
The score was 1-1.
Scotland turned on the pressure after the goal and in the 65th minute, Krout would put Scotland up for good. A throw in from Leo Morales led Krout to a break away which put him one versus one with Hoke's goalkeeper. Krout tucked the ball away for the easy score.
Krout's second goal of the game was the game winner. The score was 2-1.
McDavid thought Krout and his teammates played well enough to get their first conference win.
"Balyn's play was good tonight, he finished well for us as well," he said. "Most of all, I am happy for the boys for playing hard throughout the game."
After losing two games in a row and being out scored 5-0 in those games, McDavid said that the team made some adjustments at Tuesday's practice.
"We made some adjustments at practice on Tuesday after playing a talented Pinecrest team on Monday," he said. "We wanted to possess the ball more, and the adjustments showed tonight."
Hoke out shot Scotland by a ratio of 12 to eight. Hoke also had nine shots on goals over Scotland's four.
Scotland had more corner kicks than Hoke with six while the Bucks had five on the night.
Wheeler started in goal for the Scots and had a game high three saves. Yarborough who came in the game midway through the first half , received the win after losing the past two games. He had two saves in the game for the Scots.
The Scots will travel to Lumberton on Monday to take on the Pirates in another Southeastern Conference match-up at 7 p.m.
