The Fighting Scots varsity soccer team lost its first conference match of the year on Monday night to Pinecrest.
The Patriots dominated Scotland in every aspect of the game in the 3-0 win. Pinecrest controlled possession, had more chances to score and were in better shape than the Scots.
The Scots (4-5-1 and 0-1 Southeastern conf.) played hard the whole game but were not able to capitalize on chances to score.
Pinecrest got on the board early from a cross by a Pinecrest midfielder to a forward. The ball went across the goal to the far post where Scotland goalkeeper John Yarbourgh was out of position and the Pinecrest forward shot for the goal. The goal came just two minutes into the game.
Scotland's best chance to score was in the first half when Joseph Monroe took a free kick after a foul was called by the referee. Monroe drove the ball into the box, Pinecrest's net-minder went up to catch the ball and dropped the ball in front of him and immediately picked the ball up before Scotland could react to what happened. The goal would be the game winner for the Patriots.
The score would stay 1-0 going into the half.
In the second half Pinecrest scored again in the 51st minute. Pinecrest received a corner kick and the ball was played to the near post. A Patriots player flicked the ball and was put into the goal past Yarbourgh at the far post.
Pinecrest would score minutes later for the final time. In the 74th minute, Scotland substitute goalkeeper Josh Wheeler charged out to the top of his 18-yard box but misplayed the ball and Pinecrest had an open net to score on. The game ended with the score being 3-0.
Pinecrest led in shots taken with a 18 to three differential. Pinecrest also had eight shots on goal while Scotland only had one.
Yarbourgh earned his second straight loss for the Scots while having a game high four saves. Wheeler also had two saves for the Scots.
The Scots will look to get their first Southeastern conference win on Wednesday at Pate Stadium against Hoke County at 7 p.m.
